【摘要】:Thedescriptiveinformationrequiredinthispracticecanbeusedtodescribeasoiltoaidintheevaluationofitssignificantpropertiesforengineeringuse.ThedescriptiveinformationrequiredinthispracticeshouldbeusedtosupplementtheclassificationofasoilasdeterminedbyTestMethodD2487.ThispracticemaybeusedinidentifyingsoilsusingtheclassificationgroupsymbolsandnamesasprescribedinTestMethodD2487.SincethenamesandsymbolsusedinthispracticetoidentifythesoilsarethesameasthoseusedinTestMethodD2487,itshallbeclearlystatedinreportsandallotherappropriatedocuments,thattheclassificationsymbolandnamearebasedonvisual-manualprocedures.Thispracticeistobeusednotonlyforidentificationofsoilsinthefield,butalsointheoffice,laboratory,orwhereversoilsamplesareinspectedanddescribed.Thispracticehasparticularvalueingroupingsimilarsoilsamplessothatonlyaminimumnumberoflaboratorytestsneedberunforpositivesoilclassification.Note48212;Theabilitytodescribeandidentifysoilscorrectlyislearnedmorereadilyundertheguidanceofexperiencedpersonnel,butitmayalsobeacquiredsystematicallybycomparingnumericallaboratorytestresultsfortypicalsoilsofeachtypewiththeirvisualandmanualcharacteristics.Whendescribingandidentifyingsoilsamplesfromagivenboring,testpit,orgroupofboringsorpits,itisnotnecessarytofollowalloftheproceduresinthispracticeforeverysample.Soilswhichappeartobesimilarcanbegroupedtogether;onesamplecompletelydescribedandidentifiedwiththeothersreferredtoassimilarbasedonperformingonlyafewofthedescriptiveandidentificationproceduresdescribedinthispractice.ThispracticemaybeusedincombinationwithPracticeD4083whenworkingwithfrozensoils.Note58212;Notwithstandingthestatementsonprecisionandbiascontainedinthisstandard:Theprecisionofthistestmethodisdependentonthecompetenceofthepersonnelperformingitandthesuitabilityoftheequipmentandfacilitiesused.AgenciesthatmeetthecriteriaofPracticeD3740aregenerallyconsideredcapableofcompetentandobjectivetesting.UsersofthistestmethodarecautionedthatcompliancewithPracticeD3740doesnotinitselfassurereliabletesting.Reliabletestingdependsonseveralfactors;PracticeD3740providesameansforevaluatingsomeofthosefactors.1.1Thispracticecoversproceduresforthedescriptionofsoilsforengineeringpurposes.1.2Thispracticealsodescribesaprocedureforidentifyingsoils,attheoptionoftheuser,basedontheclassificationsystemdescribedinTestMethodD2487.Theidentificationisbasedonvisualexaminationandmanualtests.Itmustbeclearlystatedinreportinganidentificationthatitisbasedonvisual-manualprocedures.1.2.1Whenpreciseclassificationofsoilsforengineeringpurposesisrequired,theproceduresprescribedinTestMethodD2487shallbeused.1.2.2Inthispractice,theidentificationportionassigningagroupsymbolandnameislimitedtosoilparticlessmallerthan3in.(75mm).1.2.3Theidentificationportionofthispracticeislimitedtonaturallyoccurringsoils(eitherintactordisturbed).Note18212;Thispracticemaybeusedasadescriptivesystemappliedtosuchmaterialsasshale,claystone,shells,crushedrock,etc.(see......
